A metal of a whitish grey colour, similar to tin, but with little brilliance. It is brittle and easy to pulverize, but difficult to fuse, requiring a temperature equal to that which is necessary to melt cast iron. Like iron it is attracted by the magnet. In its metallic state it is of little use, but its oxide is employed to impart a blue colour to fusible and vitreous substances. See Zaffre and Smalts.
