Those methods which accomplish the union of two pieces of metal directly by fusion of one to the other, without the intervention of another metal at the joint, are classed as autogenous methods. Those which accomplish union between two metals by means of an intermediate metal, as in soldering and brazing, are classed as heterogeneous methods.
