Deciduous woody climbers. Stems terete, slender; pith large, continuous, round, white. Buds small, solitary, sessile, subglobose, with about 6 mucronate scales. Leaf-scars alternate, half-elliptical; bundle-trace 1; stipule-scars minute.

1. C_. scandens L. Climbing Bittersweet. A twining shrub, climbing to 7 m. or higher; stems and buds glabrous, brownish-gray; fruit a globose pod opening in autumn and exposing the ornamental scarlet seeds, persistent into winter. Thickets, Quebec to Manitoba, south to Georgia, Louisiana, and Oklahoma (Fig. 192).
