Deciduous trees with large axillary spines and milky juice. Twigs moderate, rounded, glabrous; pith moderate, round, pale, continuous. Buds small, depressed-globose, sessile, solitary or multiple, with about 5 scales; end-bud lacking. Leaf-scars alternate, half-round or triangular; bundle-traces several; stipule-scars small. 1. M. pomifera (Raf.) Schneid. Osage-Orange. Hedge-Apple. A tree 10-20 m. high, with ridged brown bark and spreading branches; twigs buff or orange, glabrous; wood bright orange. Native in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, much cultivated and naturalized eastwards and northwards (Fig. 90).
