The principal adulterations of Port wines are found in the mixing, or blending, or compounding, of wines which have some similarity to Port and to which the name "Port" is given. In the United States a number of wines have been called "Port," usually with a geographical restriction, as, for instance, "California Port," "Old Virginia Port," etc. It is hardly proper even to allow this designation in the limitation showing that it is of American origin. The character of these so-called Port wines is so different from that of the genuine that they cannot be recognized even as imitations or as types of a wine of this distinguished character. As in all other cases of the imitation of foreign names it would be far better if American wine growers would create a nomenclature of their own and drop all imitations of foreign character or quality.
