A wine almost as celebrated as sherry is produced in Portugal near the city of Oporto, from which the name "Port" is derived. Under the agreement of different nations to respect each other's trade marks and copyrights and under the regulations of the food law which forbid any false information respecting origin the term "Port," when used without qualification is applied only to the wines coming from Portugal and from that part of it specified above. The region of Portugal in which the wine is produced is comprised in the area of the Douro River shown in map. The illustration shows the center of the district where the finest wines are produced. I am indebted to Challoner1 for many interesting facts connected with the production of Port wine. The name "O Porto" in Portuguese means "The Gate." The name is attributed to the landing of the Gauls in Portugal many centuries ago. The port of Oporto is the mouth of the beautiful river Douro, along the banks of which the wonderful vineyards which characterize this part of the country are found. Not only grapes, but olives, almonds, figs, peaches, nectarines, maize and tobacco are grown in this region.
