The plant yielding cocain is the coca shrub Erythroxylon coca. It grows on the eastern slopes of the Andes to a great distance both north and south of the equator. The alkaloid is found in the leaves, which resemble the leaves of the tea plant. Cocain was separated from the leaves by Wohler in 1860.
