While American brandy is drunk to some extent by the Californians and others who make it, it has no distinct place on the American market. One of the chief uses of so-called American brandy is for the fortification of a so-called sweet wine, so that a sufficient amount of alcohol may be present in the wine to prevent further fermentation.
