One cup sugar, one and one-half cups molasses, one cup coffee or sour milk, one-half cup boiling water with one teaspoon soda dissolved, one-half cup shortening, two eggs, nuts, flour to make dough stiff enough to drop from spoon.

Cream one scant cupful of sugar and one-half cupful of but-' ter and add flavoring. Sift into one and three-fourths cupfuls of flour one-fourth teaspoonful of salt and one teaspoon of baking powder. Add three well-beaten eggs and part of the flour, then the milk and the rest of the flour. Beat thoroughly for ten minutes. Bake in loaf, layer or gem tins. - Contributed, Denver, Colo.
