3 1/2 cups mild molasses 7 ounces chocolate 1 3/4 cups hot water 3 1/2 teaspoons soda 2/3 cup oil or butter

3 1/2 teaspoons ginger 3 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon 1 3/4 teaspoons salt 3 1/2 cups barley flour 2 1/3 cups rice flour

Mix molasses and hot water; add half of oil, then flour which has been sifted with dry ingredients. Add melted chocolate and remaining oil. Pour into shallow, oiled pans to one inch or less in depth. Bake in moderate oven. Serve plain, with vanilla icing, or with whipped cream.
