1/2 cup butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 cups flour
1/2 cup milk
4 egg whites
2 teaspoons baking powder
Mix and sift the dry ingredients. Cream the shortening and sugar and add flour and milk alternately. Fold in the well beaten egg whites and bake in a thin sheet in a moderate oven 25 minutes.
Put three tablespoons full of butter and a cupful of brown sugar in an iron frying pan. Let it simmer for a few minutes. Then add sliced canned pineapple just to fit pan. A medium pan requires about seven slices around and one in the middle. Then make a batter of three eggs, one and a half cups of sugar, one-half cup water, one teaspoon vanilla, a pinch of salt, one and a half teaspoons baking powder, one and a half cups flour.
Pour this batter over the pineapple; put frying pan into oven, leaving it in a hot oven for ten minutes; reduce heat and bake about fifty minutes. Turn out of the pan on a large plate. Serve with whipped cream,
3 cups pastry flour
1 cup sugar
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon mace
1 teaspoon cloves
1/2 cup liquid fat
1 1/4 cups water
1 teaspoon vanilla
Sift together all dry ingredients. Add liquid fat with water and vanilla and stir until well mixed. Bake in layers in a moderately hot oven 20 minutes; in a loaf in a moderate oven 45 minutes.

1 cup raisins
1/2 pound figs
1 teaspoon soda
1 cup of boiling water
2 cups flour
Cream butter and sugar, add eggs. Put figs and raisins through food chopper and add to boiling water; add soda; add pinch of nutmeg and cinnamon. Add flour. Bake in two layers in moderate oven.

1/4 cup melted butter or shortening
2 eggs
Milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Mix sugar, flour, baking powder and salt together. Put butter in measuring cup, add the eggs and fill cup with milk. Add liquid to the dry ingredients and mix well. Pour into an oblong pan. Bake in a hot oven (400° Fahrenheit) 20 minutes. Cool and cover with any quick frosting.
7 eggs
7 tablespoonfuls sugar
1/2 lb. ground walnut meats Pinch of salt
Beat egg yolks till light. Add sugar, salt and ground walnuts. Stir. Beat egg whites till stiff and add to mixture. Mix all together and bake in slow oven 50 minutes. When cold serve with whipped cream. This recipe will serve 6 persons.
2 squares chocolate
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon melted shortening
1 teaspoon soda
1 cup milk
1 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/3 teaspoon salt
Dissolve the soda in a half cup of milk. Grate the chocolate and melt in the remainder of the milk. Mix together the sugar and shortening, add vanilla, salt, the soda dissolved in the milk, and the flour; beat thoroughly. Then beat in the milk, still hot, in which the chocolate has been melted. Bake in a loaf about fifty minutes in a moderate oven. This cake will keep moist for several days.
