This cottage (see fig. 139.) was the residence of the late Rev. Anthony Hedley. It is situated in a most romantic spot, at the head or opening of a deep rocky glen, which runs southward, and the bottom of which is washed by the Chinely Burn, a small stream which falls into the River Tyne. The Burn runs for some time in a southerly direction; when, suddenly turning eastward, it approaches the house, and, just opposite to it, forms a beautiful natural cascade, which is seen to great advantage from some of the principal windows. It here turns at right angles, and runs southward, down the west side of the grounds, over a complete bed of shelving rocks, and under a rustic bridge at the south extremity; and, a short way below, it is turned aside westward by a very high rock, which is crowned with hanging woods. On the east, south-east, and west, rise gently-swelling hills, beautifully covered with wood.
