Rupture of the gall-bladder or of the ducts outside the liver may occur from over-distension, or it may be the result of injury. The rupture takes place into the peritoneum and the bile causes peritonitis. The inflammation is sub-acute causing great thickening of the peritoneum. A peculiar appearance is sometimes produced, the thickened peritoneum presenting an orange-coloured surface from biliary staining.
