This section is from the book "Cancer Manual For Public Health Nurses", by National Cancer Institute. Also available from Amazon: Cancer Nursing: A Manual For Public Health Nurses.
It is now over a decade since the first manual on "Cancer Nursing" was written. In recent years there have been numerous requests for a publication containing information about newer therapies and allied nursing responsibilities. Before this new manual was written, a number of nurses were asked to express their opinions as to the information they would like to see included in a new publication.
This manual is not intended to be a complete text on cancer. It does include current information about cancer of selected sites, including treatment and nursing care. Emphasis is placed on the function of the public health nurse in a cancer control program and care of the whole patient-psychological as well as physical.
Continuing research will bring new knowledge about cancer and undoubtedly at some future date some of the statements in this manual will become outmoded. However, it is assumed that the public health nurse will read the current professional literature and participate in available educational programs with a view to assessing those aspects which affect her role in providing nursing services.
