The following varieties of food grains belonging to this im-portant natural order, are mentioned by Sanskrit writers -
Dhάnya. Oryza sativa, Linn. Vern. Dhan, Beng. Hind.
Godhuma. Triticum vulgare, Linn. Gam, B. Genhu, H.
Yava. Hordeum hexastichum, Linn. Jab, Beng. Jow, Hind.
These three are considered the best of grains. The following varieties pass by the name of
Kudhάnya or inferior grains and
Kshudra dhanya or minor grains.

Kangu. Setaria Italica, Kunth. Vern. Kangni, B. Kord, H.
China. Panicum miliaceum, Linn. China ghas, B.

Nivάrά. Wild variety of Oryza sativa, Linn. Uridhan, B.

Gavedhukά. Some species of Coix, Gargaredhan, Beng.
Rάgi. Eleusine corocana, Gaertner. Marua, Beng.
Devadhάnya, Andropogon Saccharatus, Linn.. Deodhan.B.H.
Venuja. Seeds of Bambusa arundinacea. Willd.
Chάruka. Seeds of Saccharum Sara, Roxb. Sarabij, B.
