Inunction is the process of rubbing into the skin oils or ointments that contain a drug, or drugs, that can be absorbed and cause systemic effect. The inner surfaces of the thighs and arms are the parts generally selected for this treatment. Inunction is but little practiced except to thus obtain the action of mercury, in syphilis, if the drug causes unpleasant symptoms when taken by the mouth.
