Small doses increase appetite and digestive power, and stimulate the secreting organs; but under larger or continued doses, this stimulation readily passes into irritation, and there are often dryness of the tongue, redness of the pharynx, and some gastric irritation, with colic and diarrhoea (Cullerier); on the other hand, though the intestinal secretions are increased, constipation has been noticed by several observers.
