In sub-acute or chronic stages of otorrhoea, an alum-injection of the strength already mentioned - 4 to 6 gr. to the ounce -is cheap, and often effective: its use should be preceded by a douche of plain water, otherwise the alum will be prevented by coagulated secretion from directly reaching the affected membrane. The remedy should not be continued too long, or it may excite irritation.

In chronic ozaena (offensive nasal discharges), a douche of double or treble strength may be used. Homolle has recommended the single sulphate as a better remedy for this disorder, and others have preferred the chloride (chloralum) or acetate.

Nasal Polypi have sometimes been cured, or greatly relieved by the insufflation of finely powdered alum, or strong alum solution.
