After cleansing the sore with spiritus saponis alkalinus, and drying it, the pure acid is dusted on to it, and a little cotton is laid over all, secured in place with a strip of adhesive plaster. It is generally sufficient to change the dressing once a day, but in cases of a free discharge it should be removed twice a day. At the end of three days the surface of the sore becomes covered with a moderately thick white crust. The use of the acid is then discontinued, and an emollient ointment is applied, spread on linen. After the crust falls off, cicatrization takes place in a few days. H. von Hebra.

After washing the chancre, so as to remove all pus and blood, and at the same time to irrigate it, cover it with a thin sponge previously soaked in a solution of acetate of aluminum. When the surface of the ulcer becomes suffi-ciently white, which occurs in a few hours, the sponge is removed and leaving the ulcer entirely uncovered, dry it by means of a hand bellows taking care that nothing shall touch it. As soon as dry cover it with elastic collodion.
