Latin, Scilla
Eng., Squill. The bulb of Urginea maritima. Average Dose.-l 1/2 grains (0.1 Gm.).
Eng., Vinegar of Squill. Represents 10 per cent. of the drug.
15 minims (1 mil).
Eng., Fluidextract of Squill. Average Dose.- 1 1/2 minims (0.1 mil).
Eng., Syrup of Squill. Represents 4.5 per cent. of the drug. Contains some Acetic Acid.
30 minims (2 mils).
Eng., Compound Syrup of Squill. Synonym, Hive Syrup. Represents Squill 8 per cent., Senega 8 per cent., Antimony and Potassium Tartrate 0.2 per cent.
30 minims (2 mils).
Eng., Tincture of Squill. Represents 10 per cent. of the drug.
15 minims (1 mil).
Expectorant, diuretic, emetic.
Employed in the treatment of bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, cardiac diseases, dropsy, etc. Not often prescribed.
When employed as a diuretic, Powdered Squill is the form of common choice. (See Digitalis.) It is usually combined with other agents and administered in pills or capsules. As an expectorant the syrup is sometimes prescribed. It is usually associated with other agents.
Squill and its preparation are not often used by the profession.
