Q. What is considered the best receipt for coating a lead-lined tank to preserve the lead and prevent sweating?

A. Pure waters act upon lead more energetically than those containing carbonates. Water containing carbonates will form a carbonate of lead coating in the tank, and so prevent or retard the solution of the lead. We know of no instance where this has been practically applied. By the sweating in this case we presume you mean the condensation of water on the outside due to the lower temperature of the water as compared with that of the surrounding atmosphere. This cannot be helped, and in good work safes are provided under the tanks to catch this water of condensation.
