This interesting and valuable series of papers, originally published in The Sanitary Engineer, have been re-arranged and re-written, with the addition of new matter.

The volume is published in response to the general demand that these important papers should be issued in a more convenient and permanent form, and also because almost all the reliable literature on this subject has been furnished by English Authors, and written with reference to the climate of England, which is more uniform and has a higher proportion of moisture. The need of a book based upon the conditions of the American climate is therefore apparent.
