This picture shows part of the auditorium of the high school at Springville, Utah, during one of the school's annual national exhibits.

You see, it is one thing to know how to play an instrument, but it is another and more interesting thing to teach someone else and to play for the enjoyment of others. This, at least, is what the students in this New Jersey school found. It may be that your own community could start a small orchestra or choral group.

An Art Exhibit

The other forms of art, too, should not be neglected. In scores of cases young people have been responsible for the development of art centers. In Springville, Utah, for example, the high school became interested in paintings. Working with the townspeople, they planned an exhibit of well-known artists.

From this humble beginning there developed an annual exhibit that attracts artists and art lovers from all over the country. The school has built up its own painting collection - one of the most beautiful gifts a town could ever hope to possess.

Scores of such instances could be cited of young people of all ages, living in cities, villages, or on farms, who have initiated or co-operated with worth-while projects that have grown into real community enterprises. In this way the leisure time of everyone concerned has been enriched. Community drama is an especially rich field of activity. The famous Little Theater in Fargo, North Dakota, is a good example of what can be done. In the little auditorium which seats only 350 persons, there have been presented many of the leading dramas of the world, with rural people playing all of the parts. From Fargo the idea has spread to all parts of America. Groups of interested citizens help make the scenery, advertise the play, and participate in the final production. Such a thing can be started by a small neighborhood group which is interested in some form of drama.

In this connection we cannot overlook the possibilities of puppet shows as a community enterprise. Puppetry is especially suitable for young people because a large auditorium is not needed and the cost of production is low. Furthermore, the equipment can be moved easily and it is therefore possible to present productions before different groups with little trouble. Puppet shows are a great treat to crippled children and to those confined to a hospital for some reason.
