Excelsior. The word is derived from the Latin, and is the comparative of the adjective excelsus, high, lofty. Its mean-ing, therefore, is - " still higher;" and in the beautiful poem by Professor Longfellow, it is adopted as the motto of a genius whose world experience is thus illustrated.
