[AS. pinewincla.] A sea-snail or small shell-fish, found in abundance between tide-marks on rocks or adhering to sea-weeds. Periwinkles feed on sea-weeds, and are often collected and boiled in their shells, from which they are afterwards extracted and used for food.-Also a trailing herb of the genus Vinca.
