The contract must be one for the payment of money only.1 Accordingly, a promise to pay in work,2 as a railroad ticket,3 or in property other than money,4 even if such other property is itself negotiable, as bills of exchange,5 checks,6 notes,7 or United States bonds,8 is not negotiable. But a promise to pay in "current funds" has been held to mean current money, and hence to be negotiable;9 and so of "current funds of the state of Ohio,"10 or "currency." 11 A note payable in notes of a specific bank,12 or in bank-notes generally,13 is not negotiable. A promise to pay foreign money is negotiable.14

A provision in a bond of a corporation for payment in money or in stock at the option of the holder does not render it non-negotiable.15

Covenants in a written contract which provide for the doing of some act other than making a payment or securing or enforcing such payment will render the contract non-negotiable.16
