For assembling a modern, "model" kitchen, safety match boxes are made to order. True, there will be no recessed toe space, because the counters, according to scale, will be 36 in. high when piled four high. The realist can glue them up three high, and set them on a piece of 3/4-in. material recessed about f in.

Figure 4.7 shows how the kitchen in our model doll house can be fitted with thirty-four safety match boxes and four wooden blocks to form an up-to-date, L-shaped kitchen possessing enough drawer space to silence the most exacting housewife. The wooden blocks range from 3 in. by 11/2 in. to 2 in. by 21/2 in. and are cut as indicated in details B, C, and D. It is a good idea to put off trimming the "filler" corner block C until all other units are assembled and tried for fit. The same is true of the height of all the blocks, which is ultimately determined by the thickness of the counter covering.

Much grief will be avoided by cutting refrigerator A from a solid block 23/4 in. square and 5 in. high. However, since it is adjacent to the open rear of the kitchen, a box with a hinged door can be built up as indicated in the detail. Shelves may be cut from white cardboard, or from pieces of celluloid or well trimmed screenwire cloth and set on thick cardboard cleats to hold the whittled and painted, or "boughten" plastic foods. It will be noted, however, that if a hinged door is provided, it will have to open the wrong way in order to permit the small housewife to arrange her stores.

Modem Kitchen From Match Boxes

For the sink, a hole is drilled | in. deep in block B and chiseled square.

A bent piece of wire forms the mixing faucet with two glass pinheads for hot and cold handles. The "doors" below, like those of range D, are merely suggested with India ink and pin handles. So also, are the doors to the cupboards on the walls (E), which are strips of 1/2-in. material 41/2 in. wide, or strips 21/4 in. wide for the cupboards, topped by 2-in. strips representing the bulkheads built up to the ceiling. Small black cardboard disks can represent the four stove burners, with glass pinheads on the upright section at the rear for electric switches.

Model Bathroom Fixtures

The entire top or counter can be covered with paper and enameled white, or with scraps of solid color oilcloth. The stainless steel sink and the ice cube compartment in the refrigerator can be covered with aluminum paint. For a more modern motif, short sections of wooden match sticks can be used as handles on cabinets, drawers, range and refrigerator, instead of knobs.
