Carpenters' tools may conveniently be divided into 7 classes, as follows: - (1) Guiding tools - rules, lines, squares; (2) Holding tools - pincers, vice; (3) Rasping tools - saws, files; (4) Edge tools - chisels, planes; (5) Boring tools - awls, gimlets, bits; (6) Striking tools - hammers, mallets; (7) Chopping tools - axes, adzes. In an eighth category may be put such important accessories as the carpenter's bench, nails, screws, and various hints and recipes.
