1. The patient should be kept very quiet in bed until all symptoms of fever have disappeared.
2. The chest should be kept covered with flannel, and turpentine stupes.
3. The local abstraction of blood by cups, or leeches, if there is much pain, or give relief by means of opium.
4. Treat the disease with which the inflammation is accompanied.
5. In the febrile stage the diet should consist of liquids.
6. In extreme pain, with sleeplessness and jactitating movements by the limbs, administer alcoholic stimulants, repeated in small doses, but not to intoxication.
7. Maintain a free action of kidneys. In renal complications avoid opium.
8. In the advanced stage resort to digitalis, iodide of potassium blisters, issues, etc.
9. Aspiration, when positively determined that pus is in the pericardium.
