One Metre - (The unit of length) the ten millionth part of a quarter of the meridian of the earth.

One Decimetre - The tenth part of one metre, or 0. 1 metre.

One Centimetre - The hundredth part of one metre, or 0.01 metre.

One Millimetre - The thousandth part of one metre, or 0.001 metre.

Weights

One Myriagramme - 10,000 grammes.

One Kilogramme - 1,000 grammes.

One Hectogramme - 100 grammes.

One Decagramme - 10 grammes.

One Gramme - (The unit of weight) the weight of a cubic centimetre of water, at its maximum density, 40 C.

One Decigramme - The tenth part of one gramme, or 0.1 gramme.

Posological Table

To ascertain the approximate quantity of each medicine in a prescription in each teaspoonful dose or fluid drachm.

Explanation

For example take the following formula:

Strychniae...........gr. j

Quiniae............ gr. xx

Acidi sulphurici diluti......3 ss

Syrupi simplicis.........3 j

Aquae destillatae..... q. s. ad 3 vj

M. S. Dose, one teaspoonful morning and evening.

According to the above table, each teaspoonful would contain, of strychnine .02 of a grain, of quinine .415 of a grain, of the acid .625 of a minimum, and the excipients of water and syrup to make up the rest.

If the above formula is to be administered in pilular form, the excipiens are changed for a mass that will make 48 pills. Here we see a fluid drachm is equivalent to a pill, and the results, must be the same. To utilize this table for this double purpose, it need not be added that this equivalent of numbers of fluidrachms and pills must be observed. Prescriptions that are beyond the range of this table, can nevertheless be readily estimated by its aid.
