Latin, Gambir
Eng., Gambir. Synonym, Pale Catechu. An extract prepared from the leaves and twigs of Ourouparia Gambir. Average Dose.-15 grains (1 Gm.).
Eng., Compound Tincture of Gambir. Represents Gambir, 5 per cent.; Cinnamon, 2.5 per cent. Average Dose.-1 fluidrachm (4 mils).
Used in the treatment of diarrhea, hemorrhoids, epistaxis, etc.
This was introduced into the Pharmacopeia (viii) to replace Catechu.
The Compound Tincture is the preparation of choice. Its most common use is as an intestinal astringent, in which case it is usually prescribed with other agents, as bismuth subnitrate, chalk mixture, etc.
