The root of Phytolacca decandra. Phytolacca is depressing to the heart and respirations, and is to some extent narcotic. It is an alterative, and promotes absorption of fatty tissue. "Anti-fat" remedies sometimes contain Phytolacca. It is useful as a local medicament, and is used in various skin disorders.
