After the death of the Grand Monarque, as Louis XIV was called, a style for decoration and furniture came into vogue termed lepoque de la Ri' gence. It marks a change which took place during the infancy of the grandson of the late king, the curves and scrolls are more free, and a characteristic form of ornamentation is the frequent introduction of the heads and busts of women with the head-dress of the period, made in gilt bronze, and enriching the marqueterie commodes, tables and cabinets of the time.
