Chalybeate waters are those which contain a sufficient quantity of iron to give them a distinctive ferruginous character. They are highly prized in many forms of disease, the iron being supposed to be of a tonic nature. In chalybeate water the iron which is in solution usually becomes precipitated on standing, either by oxidation or by the escape of carbon dioxid from the solution.
