Two-thirds cup butter, 1 cup sugar, 1 1-2 cups flour, 4 eggs, 1 tablespoon milk, 1 scant teaspoon baking powder. Cream the butter and sugar together and beat until very light, beat the whites of the eggs to a stiff froth, mix the baking powder thoroughly with the flour, add a little of the flour to the cake mixture, beat until smooth, add milk, then alternately the whites of the eggs and the rest of the flour. Rake in a pan lined with buttered paper in a moderate oven. This is much like pound cake, and will keep three or four weeks. Sliced citron may be added if liked. Mrs. John Kingston.
Half cup sugar, 1-2 cup butter, 1-2 cup milk, 2 cups flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder, lemon extract 3 eggs. Separate the eggs, beat very light, and add to the batter last.

Three tablespoons butter, milk, 2 eggs, 1 cup sugar 1 cup flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder. Melt the butter in a cup, break in eggs, fill cup with milk, sift together the flour, sugar and baking powder, and beat all together. This makes three layers. . Mrs. Robert Holmes.
One cup butter. 2 cups sugar, 6 eggs, 1 cup milk, 3 cups flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon flavoring. Cream the butter and sugar, then breaking in the eggs 2 at a time, beat 5 minutes between each adding.

Two cups butter, 2 1-4 cups sugar, 5 cups flour, 5 eggs, 1 cup milk, 3 teaspoons baking powder, 3 teaspoons lemon, 2 teaspoons vanilla. Spices may be used instead of the flavoring.

Two cups sugar, 1 cup butter, 3 eggs, 1 cup sour milk, 1 level teaspoon soda, flour, spices to taste, fruit if desired.

One cup brown sugar, 1-2 cup butter, 1 1-2 cups apple sauce, 2 cups flour, 1 cup chopped raisins, 2 teaspoons soda, spice to taste. This keeps like a fruit cake.
Miss Hattie Gates.
Two cups sugar, 2-3 cup butter, 2 cups flour. 1 cup hot mashed potato, 1-2 cup sweet milk, 4 eggs. 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 cup grated chocolate, 1 cup chopped nuts, 1-2 tea-spoon cloves, 1 teaspoon each of cinnamon and nutmeg. Cream, butter and sugar, add yolks of eggs, then milk, potatoes, spices and chocolate. Sift the baking powder in with the flour, beat the batter well, add the well beaten whites of the eggs and the nuts last. This makes a large loaf.
