This is an inflammation of the skin, produced by exposure to severe cold. It affects parts which have been partially frozen. The feet are most likely to be affected. The skin is red and somewhat swollen, especially in the vicinity of the joints. There is also much burning and itching. In some cases the skin becomes cracked or ulcerated.

The Treatment of Chilblains

For the cure of severe cases of chilblain, a hot and cold foot bath should be taken every night just before retiring Carbolic-acid ointment, containing ten drops of carbolic acid to the ounce of vaseline or lard, is a very excellent remedy. Cabbage leaves are also a remedy which enjoys some reputation. Another remedy highly recommended is gently rubbing the affected parts with lemon juice just before going to bed. When ulceration occurs, carbolic-acid ointment should be applied with pledgets of cotton.
