Gamboge is a harsh and very toxic hydragogue cathartic, very wisely rarely prescribed except in small quantities to intensify the action of milder agents. The dose used to be given at 1 to 4. gr., but is now rated at 1/8 to 1/4 gr. in such combination. It thus enters into many formulae.
