Distinguished by poisonous properties; leaves entire, stipulate or raised stipular line; calyx 4-5-cleft, inferior; corolla 4-, 5-, 10-cleft, regular; stamens epipetalous, 4, 5, 10; ovary 2-, 3-, 4-celled, superior; fruit capsule or drupe. Connects Gentianaceae, Apocynaceae, Scrophulariaceae (from which differentiated by having stipules), and Rubiaceae (which has no free ovary); tropics; nervine, tonic, anthelmintic, poisonous.
