Valerianae Rhizoma. Valerian Rhizome. (Root.) The dried erect Rhizome and roots of Valeriana officinale. A short erect rhizome often sliced, yellowish-brown externally, with numerous slender roots: odour strong characteristic and disagreeable; taste, unpleasant cam-phoraceous, and slightly bitter.

1Tinctura Valerianae Ammoniata. Dose, 30 - 60 min.; 2 - 4 c.c. - 20: Oil of Nutmeg, 0.31; Oil of Lemon, 0.21; Solution of Ammonia, 10; Alcohol 60%, 90.

Veratrina. Veratrine. An alkaloid prepared from the dried ripe seeds of Schaenocaulon officinale. Pale grey, amorphous, odourless but powerfully irritant to the nose, strongly and persistently bitter and intensely acrid.

Unguentum Veratrinæ. - 2; Oleic Acid, 8; Lard, 90.

Vini. (With a dose of 10 - 30 min. or 2 - 4 fl. dr. Antimoniale. Dose 10 - 30 min. or 4 - 6 fl. dr. Ipecacuanhæ; dose, 10 - 30 min. Colchici: dose, 1 - 4 fl. dr. Ferri Citratis; 1/2 - 1 fl. oz. Quininæ; without stated dose. Aurantii, Xericum.)

Zincum. Zinc. Incompatibles of soluble salts in solution, hydrates, carbonates, phosphates arsenates, borax, tannic acid, albumin.

1Zinci Acetas. Zinc acetate. Dose, 1 - 2 grs.; 6 - 12 cgms. Translucent, colourless, crystals with a pearly lustre, and a sharp unpleasant taste. Soluble 1 in 2 1/2 of water.

2Zinci Carbonas (Calamine). A hydroxycarbonate, ZnC03, (ZnH2O2)2, H2O. A white tasteless, odourless powder. Insoluble in water.

1Zinc Chloridum. ZnCl2. Colourless, opaque rods or tablets very deliquescent and caustic. Soluble 10 in 4 of water and in alcohol.

3Liquor Zinci Chloridi. Colourless liquid with a sweetish astringent taste.

1Zinci Oxidum. Dose, 3 - 10 grs.; 2 - 6 dgms. A soft, nearly white, tasteless and inodourous powder.

1Zinci Sulphas. White Vitriol. Dose, as a tonic, 1 - 3 grs.; 1/2 - 2 dgms: as an emetic, 10 - 30 grs.; 6 - 20 dgms.

ZnSO4, 7H2O. Colourless, transparent crystals, with a strong metallic styptic taste. Soluble, 1 in less than 1 of water.

2Zinci Sulphocarbolas. Zinc Sulphocarbolate. Zinc phenol-parasulphonate. Colourless, transparent, efflorescent crystals. Soluble 1 in 2 of water, 1 in 2 1/2 of alcohol.

3Zinci Valerianas. Dose, 1 - 3 grs.; 1/2 - 2 dgms. Pearly white tabular crystals with a disagreeable odour and a metallic taste, very slightly soluble in cold water, soluble in hot water and alcohol.

2Unguentum Zinci Oleatis. A precipitate due to the mixture of solutions of Zinc Sulphate and Hard Soap, washed and dried and then mixed with Soft Paraffin.

Zingiber. Ginger. The dried and scraped rhizome of Zingiber officinale. Flat, irregular branched pieces, varying in length: odour agreeable aromatic, taste hot and pungent.

1Syrupus Zingiberis. Dose, 30 - 60 min.; 2 - 4 c.c. A strong tincture, 5; Syrup to 100.

1Tinctura Zingiberis. Dose, 30 - 60 min.; 2 - 4 c.c. - 10; Alcohol, 100: by percolation.
