Early Rose In England

Thos. Rivers, the well-known English nurseryman, writes to the London Journal of Horticulture that he considers the Early Rose potato as raised in that country, "watery, nasty and uneatable." This was when dug for cooking in July; he tried it again in September, when " on being cooked with great care they were found to, be harsh and dry, with a hard center, and a flavor perfectly original, but so unpleasant - nasty, according to our cook - that I gave them up for that year. The misnamed Early Goodrich came in with the Regents, but instead of being like that sort in flavor, the tubers were earthy, with a peculiar unearthy, and most disagreeable flavor".

P . T . Quinn , of New Jersey , informs the New York Tribune that he sold , in the second week in July , 100 barrels of Early Rose potatoes , at $8 .25 , just $5 per barrel more than was realized for last year's crop .

Early Saxifrage

This late spring has caused us to welcome with peculiar warmth the early flowers, and one which we have never before appreciated is now in such favor, that I would recommend it for the enjoyment of others - Saxifraga Virginiensis, Early Saxifrage. Two weeks since I brought into the house and placed in a saucer a little turf of this plant peeled from the rock, and have kept it supplied with water. It was then just bursting into flowers. Now, there are thirty stems six inches or more high, with large clusters of snowy flowers, and it bids to last another fortnight.

It is much finer than I have ever seen it on its native rocks, and as a living bouquet I have rarely seen it surpassed. I commend it to lovers of flowers. Yours truly,

T. S. Gold.

At a recent auction of a collection of orchids some plants of the Aerides Shroderi and of Dendrobium Falconeri sold for $60 each.

We will give an article on this subject shortly*

Early Strawberry

Highly approved in south and center of the State, also in north-west and north-east Not much known in some of the northern counties, but does well wherever known. Recommended unanimously.

The Early Tillotson Peach

A short time ago we took occasion to remark on the failure of this variety in the orchards around Rochester. Within a few weeks we have had information from several orchardists in Ohio and Kentucky showing it to be grown there with complete success. There it grows vigorously, is exempt from mildew, and the fruit is large, often eight inches in circumference, and of the finest quality. We predicted many years ago that this peach would be found better suited to a southern climate. This is one of the few instances where a variety succeeds better in other localities than that in which it originated. The Tillotson originated in Wayne county, 1ST. Y. In the course of experience we shall, no doubt, meet with similar instances.
