Take 1 pint of milk at 8o° F., add 10 grs. of pepsin, and keep the mixture at 80° F When coagulation is complete, but before the whey has begun to separate, beat the whole up smooth with a beater, and pass it through a fine milk strainer to insure the minute division of the curd. Lime water should be added to the point of neutralization when from any cause this food gives an acid reaction.

The blood must be defibrinated as it flows away, which may be done by stirring it with a bundle of twigs. Thus prepared, from four to six ounces should be thrown into the rectum twice a day. To promote a favorable disposition of the blood, the bowel should be irrigated with water once or twice a week, to carry away any retained or adherent matters. If the rectum is irritable, a little laudanum may be added to each blood enema.

Take of defibrinated bullock's blood desiccated, 180 grains; milk warmed to 100° F., 3 oz. Shake together until dissolved. Brandy, port wine, or opium to be added as ordered.
As much as 2 oz. of desiccated blood is sometimes employed in 8 oz. of milk for one enema.

1. Take brandy 3j, strong beef tea 3iij. Mix and inject,
10,232. 2. Take 6 oz. of strong beef tea, 1 oz of cream, 1/2 oz. brandy, or 1 1/2 oz. port wine for one injection.
10,233. Take 4 oz. of essence of beef, 2 oz. of port wine, 1 oz. of cod-liver oil, 2 3 of tincture of yellow cinchona and 20 drops of liquid extract of opium. Mix. For one injection. To be administered every twelve hours.
10,234. Take 1/2 oz. of brandy, 5 grs. of sulphate of quinine, 1 3 of glycerine, 1 oz. of cream, 4 oz. beef tea. Mix. For one injection. This enema may be administered every six or eight hours. Where the rectum is very irritable, or it is necessary to relieve pain, from 15 to 20 minims of liquid extract of opium may be advantageously added. To secure rapid osmosis the enemata should have an acid reaction. Add 10 minims of hydrochloric acid to 4 oz. of beef tea. - Edmund A. Kirby, M. D.

10,237.* Two or three eggs are taken, and thirty to forty-five grains of salt are added to them. The eggs are beaten up with salt. They are slowly injected by means of a soft rubber tube carried as high up into the bowel as possible. Three such enemata are given daily. An hour before each enema the rectum is cleared out by means of a large injection of warm water. - Ewald.
