Devils' Food Cake

cup butter.

1 cup sugar.

2 squares chocolate 2 eggs.

2 1/3 cups flour.

3 teaspoons baking powder.

teaspoon salt.

1 teaspoon vanilla.

cup milk.

Cream butter and add sugar gradually, while beating constantly; then add eggs, well beaten, milk, flour, mixed and sifted with baking powder, and salt and vanilla. Turn into a buttered and floured cake pan and bake in a moderate oven forty-five minutes. Cover with Ice Cream Frosting and spread Ice Cream Frosting with a thin layer of melted unsweetened chocolate, using the back of a spoon.

Fudge Cake

1 cup butter 1 cup sugar Yolks 3 eggs 1/2 cup milk.

2 cups flour.

2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder.

Whites 3 eggs.

2 ounces unsweetened chocolate.

1/2 teaspoon vanilla.

Cream butter and add sugar gradually, while beating constantly; then add yolks of eggs, well beaten. Mix and sift baking powder and flour and add alternately with milk to first mixture. Add whites of eggs, beaten until stiff, chocolate, melted over hot water, and vanilla. Turn into two buttered and floured seven-inch square pans and bake in a moderate oven. Put between and on top Fudge Frosting (see p. 350).
