Moritz Lazarius, a German author, of Jewish parentage, born at Filehne, Posen, Sept. 15, 1824. He is the son of a learned rabbi who died in 1874. He studied at the gymnasium of Brunswick, and from 1840 to 1850 at the university of Berlin. From 1860 to 1866 he was professor of psychology in the university of Bern. Returning to Berlin, he became in 1808 teacher of philosophy at the military academy. In 1809 and 1871 he was president of Jewish synods at Leipsic and Augsburg. His works include Das Leben der Seele in Mo-nographien (2 vols., Berlin, 1850-'8); Ueoer den Ursprung der Bitten (1800); Ueber die Ideen in der Gesehichte (1805); and Zur Lehre von den Sinnestansclivngen (1807).
Moritz Than, a Hungarian painter, born at Old Becse in 1828. After studying law at Pesth, he devoted himself to painting at the academy of Vienna, and spent some time in Paris, where in 1855 he painted the battle of Mohacs. He resided for a time at Rome, receiving instruction from Cornelius and Over-beck, and then settled in Pesth. His works include "Angelica and Medor," "The Tragedy of Mankind," fine altarpieces and frescoes, and the "Love of Fata Morgana," which figured at the Paris exhibition of 1867.
Moritz Von Schwind, a German painter, born in Vienna in 1804, died in Munich, Feb. 8, 1871. He studied under Cornelius, and in 1839 designed frescoes for the art hall at Carlsruhe. In 1847 he became professor at the academy of Munich. His best known productions are the designs for St. Michael's church, London, and for the Vienna opera house. He excelled in fairy and fanciful subjects. His best and last work was "The Beautiful Melusina".
Morlaks, the name of a portion of the Slavic population of Dalmatia and the adjoining maritime districts of Austro-IIungary. They are skilful mariners, and form a large portion of the sailors in the Austrian navy. The coast of the Adriatic between Carlopago and Zengg is from them called Morlacca, and the strait between it and the islands of Veglia, Arbe, and Pago the strait of Morlacca.
